Pork Pie Year 2010 Review

2010 started with more new pies to sample and it looked as though we were going to beat the bumper year of 2008. However, events and very bad weather towards the end of the year, resulted in a rather poor score of only 29 different pies being sampled, but of this number, 17 were sampled for the very first time. Now we have all the scores in, I can announce our top 5 pies of 2010:

R.A. Cawdron and Pickering swapping places from last year and Jarolds Deli pie makes it onto our all time top 5, displacing Graves of Briston, sampled on 9^th March 2008. That concludes 2010's pie munching.

Pork Pie Year 2009 Review

2009 was another great pie year, though petering out in the final month, however we sampled 45 different pork pies (counting the two Christmas “novelty” pies)! Trailing the 49 of last year, though of the 43 bona fide pork pies, an incredible 29 were sampled for the very first time. Now we have all the scores in, I can announce our top 5 pies of 2009:

M & M Rutland

We start the month of August with pies from one of the counties favorite butchers, M & M Rutland of Melton Constable. We were in the locality at Hindolveston about two miles south. From here, Ricky led us on a very pleasant pie appetizing walk, the highlight for the girls being the Alpacas in a field by one of the footpaths. No church on this walk, so we had lunch at the kiddies playground in Briston, then afterwards, some played on equipment provided. A short walk round the corner to the Green Man for a pint of IPA and the last few laps of the Grand Prix. Returning to the cars, pie grazing had to be put on hold while the Pie Master had to ferry walkers up the road to a hut selling local produce. After this diversion, King Canape produced a Ricotta & Pancetta flan and Thai spiced chicken in a thinly sliced mooli with a sweet soy dip! Next, the pies kindly supplied by Paul, from M & M Rutland, these were made in-house and without the onion marmalade as sampled at Geldeston on the 29th of April last year. The pies were very fresh being still hot when collected on Saturday. The piecrust was very crumbly when cut and tasted good. The filling too was good, spoilt by being a little over salted. These scored a very respectable 7.68182 with a high standard deviation of 0.92932. Then the biscuit course of Finest Shortbread and a Belgian selection. Then finally to complete this healthy hike in the countryside Liqueur chocolate cherries from Manola. So a normalized 7.5 for M & M Rutland this time.

M and M Rutland Butchers

Gelderston was the location to try these fine pork pies that Paul had purchased from M & M Rutland Butchers, in an attempt to provide the best pork pie. Not only had he chosen to source his pies from a quality butcher, he had an accomplice in Liz - he'd bought them frozen & Liz had cooked them just hours before they were sampled for optimum freshness... it paid off, for these pies with a little onion marmalade came in with a stonking score of 9.28571 with a standard deviation of 0.56695. This gives M & M Rutland a normalised score of 9.5, the same as Mrs. King but she had a lower standard deviation and higher native score, so appropriately, retains her crown.
